Hey new parent! Are you looking at the ridiculous number of options for newborn photography in Glen Mills? It’s *almost* as overwhelming as the options for baby car seats. Carriers. Binkies. Bassinets. Whew… are you exhausted?!
Not all photographers are a good fit for every family. However, there is always a photographer that is a good fit for YOUR family. I’m here to help you make the best decision — hopefully it’ll be easier than deciding which diaper brand to try first.
As a Glen Mills newborn photographer and postpartum doula, I understand the value and importance of capturing these early moments of your baby’s life. I also value the importance of healing, closeness, and intimacy in your own home. The Brey Photo style is always authentic, down to earth, and relaxed, even when working with littles. It is my true belief that baby belongs in the parents’ arms and that new parents belong at home. You’ve been running around to appointments for the past eight months — my goal is to ensure your newborn session doesn’t feel like another. I also believe that no precious moment should come at the expense of a mother and baby’s needs. As a doula, my goal is to bring that holistic, nurturing vibe to your photography session.
Let me guide you through the process of finding a newborn photographer in Glen Mills and provide you with all the information you need to capture the early moments of your baby’s life. Here are some of the most common questions about Glen Mills newborn photography.
What should I look for when hiring a newborn photographer in Glen Mills?
Finding a newborn photographer can be an overwhelming task. There are so many photographers in Glen Mills that offer various different packages, prices, styles, and more. To streamline the process a bit, here’s a simple rundown of what to look out for when choosing a photographer.
Experience
This may seem like an obvious one, but it’s important to find a photographer who specializes in newborn photography. While there are many photographers that are happy to photograph newborns, they might not mention that they actually haven’t worked with infants before. And when it comes to your baby, an inexperienced newborn photographer is an unsafe newborn photographer.
Of course, I’m not trying to scare you! My point is that researching your photographer and seeing a comprehensive portfolio of newborn photography is a must. I’m also not trying to knock other photographers — in fact, I was in their shoes about 10 years ago.
I started my career when I was still in my teens. Though I could take pretty pictures, I had zero experience actually working with newborns or postpartum mamas. I was always honest about my experience level and I do feel that I brought some value to the families I worked with at the time (many are return clients!). However, as a mother, I look back and shake my head! I had no business offering new moms photoshoots with my level of experience.
Thankfully, I quickly realized that my clients deserved a better experience. I paused offering that service and recognized that I had so much to learn before I even thought about working with little ones again. Since then, I have poured countless hours into education, mentorships, proper gear, and safe supplies. I’m proud to say I now have over 10 years of experience working with newborns and their families in a safe, comfortable fashion.
Care & Safety
Speaking of safety, this is another top priority that should be on your list while looking for a newborn photographer. Unfortunately, there are currently no newborn safety standards for photographers. This is why it’s so important to communicate clearly and openly about your needs. While there are opportunities for education, be wary of photographers with badges claiming that they’re “certified” or “accredited.” Oftentimes, these badges are more of a website decoration than an earned educational achievement.
I urge you to find a reputable professional photographer that you trust whole-heartedly. The photographer you are looking to hire should at least have more than a handful of reviews, an extensive portfolio that looks consistent, liability insurance, a business license, and a professional attitude. They should be able to answer your questions, walk you through the newborn session process, and offer compassion during those postpartum moments. The right photographer will make you and your baby feel safe, comfortable, and secure. That being said, know that hiring a photographer who prioritizes this kind of care might cost you more than the alternative.
What can I expect during a newborn photography session?
During a newborn photography session, I’ll work to create a comfortable and safe environment for your baby. Your session will be easy, snuggly, and family-focused. I also encourage parents, siblings, and even fur babies to participate for as long as they would like! While my sessions are largely unposed, you’ll receive lots of direction and help to create real, raw moments. The goal is to capture your family’s authentic story in the comfort of your own home.
Working with newborns comes with lots of diaper changes, messes, new mama emotions, and snack breaks. Don’t worry: we build in time for those. We’ll capture the whole family together, each parent with your new arrival, and baby’s itty bitty details. A standard session also includes natural, comfortable posing for baby on their own for those heirloom quality baby portraits.
I also love to offer professional styling, including hair and makeup services, for postpartum mamas. As a mother, I know how difficult it can be to manage the chaos and hormones of giving birth. You might feel like the person in the mirror is suddenly unidentifiable — I get it. Styling services can be a magical way to make mom feel pampered, relaxed, and more herself. This add-on is entirely optional, and entirely handled by Brey Photo: no scheduling, calling, texting, or hunting down a stylist required.
When should schedule my newborn photography session?
I recommend booking your newborn photography session as early as possible in your pregnancy to ensure availability. I try to schedule new parents roughly two weeks after baby’s arrival; I do not work with newborns less than one week old. Many photographers will limit newborn sessions to children under two weeks, but I adore working with newborns of any age. Once baby is older than six weeks, I consider the session an in-home documentary session. This means we’ll focus on capturing baby’s individual personality, her space, and her relationship with you!
I understand that those first few precious weeks of life are often tough and tiring. To offer an even better experience for families I photograph, I’ve pursued extensive postpartum doula training. Newborn photography is something I find great joy in. However, I also know that these moments are much more than just photographs. Because of that, I will always put your child’s safety and comfort first and foremost. It doesn’t matter if they’re one week old or two months old: you and your baby’s experience is top priority. Once we ensure that, then we can start creating beautiful, timeless memories.
If you’re an expecting mother and you feel you may need some additional support, Brey Photo also offers prenatal and postpartum doula care. You can book with me anytime from 36 weeks through the first six months of your baby’s life.
Do I need to bring anything to my newborn photoshoot?
Likely, you’ll already have everything you need right at home already. I encourage you to bring a few personal items that you would like to incorporate into the photos, like a special blanket or toy. Some things that are helpful to have on hand include milk or formula, a spare change of clothes for each family member, and thick burp cloths.
When will I get my newborn photos back?
After the session, you can expect to receive the final edited photos within 30 days. All Brey Photo portrait sessions include access to digital images. I offer a range of heirloom artwork options that include both digital files and prints. I absolutely recommend ordering a few prints — this gives you a chance to preserve your memories and pass them down to your little one when they grow.
How much does newborn photography cost in Glen Mills?
Newborn photography sessions in the Glen Mills area can range from $500 to $5,000. All photographers are different and have varying offerings and packages. In line with keeping it stress-free and easy, Brey Photo Earthside sessions begin at $650. These sessions include access to digital images and heirloom artwork products that can be passed down to your little one as she grows. Newborn photography is a significant investment, and not just financially: it also requires your time, energy, and emotional availability.
